Drug Uses
Keflex is used for treatment of certain bacterial infections.
How Taken
Use Keflex as directed by your doctor. Take Keflex with or without a meal. To clear up your infection completely, take Keflex for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Keflex, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Keflex, if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a penicillin (eg, amoxicillin) or other beta–lactam antibiotic (eg, imipenem), have stomach or bowel problems (eg, inflammation), blood clotting problems, kidney or liver problems, or poor nutrition, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Keflex while you are pregnant. Keflex is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast–feeding while you use Keflex, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby. Some medicines may interact with Keflex. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Keflex may decrease the ability of your blood to clot. Avoid activities that may cause bruising or injury. Tell your doctor if you have unusual bruising or bleeding. Tell your doctor if you have dark, tarry, or bloody stools. Keflex only works against bacteria, it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold). Long–term or repeated use of Keflex may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Keflex may cause the results of some tests for urine glucose to be wrong. Keflex may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Keflex. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of Keflex. Use Keflex with extreme caution in children younger than 10 years old who have diarrhea or an infection of the stomach or bowel.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are- Diarrhea, dizziness, headache, indigestion, joint pain, stomach pain, tiredness. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately- allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), agitation, confusion, dark urine, decreased urination, fever, hallucinations, red, swollen, or blistered skin, seizures, severe or blood diarrhea, severe stomach pain, severe tiredness, unusual bruising or bleeding, unusual vaginal pain, odor, or discharge, yellowing of the eyes or skin.
Storage
Store Keflex at 77 °F (25 °C). Brief storage at 59 – 86 °F (15 – 30 °C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Keflex out of the reach of children.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Keflex overdose are- blood in the urine, muscle spasm, nausea, seizures, severe diarrhea, vomiting.
More Information
Keflex may cause dizziness. These effects may worsen if Keflex is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Keflex with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Keflex should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
